Description

For any of you old enough to remember using a bamboo fishing pole, I want you to think for a moment about that fine, thin rod of bamboo, and how far it could bend without breaking, and still pull in a good sized fish with it. Bamboo gives, and it bends, usually without snapping. In the USA, we build houses out of pine because it bends and holds up better against wind storms than even hardwood. Notice how they have hand lashes each of the poles into a set of scaffolding. Instead of laying down wooden planks, they use bamboo poles as a landing surface. You will see the workers take these down, bundle them up, and truck them off to the next job site when they are done. They will get quite a few years out of one of these poles before they snap. Also notice the western designed roof. In the south, where there is no snow, most of the roofs are flat. The people who own the apartments on the top floor usually own the roof as well. This gives them garden space. However, the top floor is the hottest in the summer because there is little protection from the sun. So, here the builder is putting on a hip roof with a vented attic to help prevent the top floor from getting so hot.

Some bamboo's will last almost forever. I can't remember seeing them in the stores lately. I guess the old days of bamboo fishing is lost here? Thanks for bringing back memories.. Nice capture. Aloha

Thanks for the info. Great shot of a good looking roof. Hand lashing each pole leaves a lot of room for human error.
