Description

The Hoshikaze 2250 universe is a space-opera setting with some cyber and hard-science inside. This history of the future is developped by the Association of the same name. We are at any point in time between 4 and 10 people to work on this universe. We maintain a wiki encyclopedia on our site, edit a yearly short stories book and have a Role-Playing-Game in the making for 2013. The Caravelle is by design planetfall-capable with its rotating warp drives, an uncommon feature that lowers its efficiency/weight ratio but opens a number of niches... Designed during the Fringe Wars, that opposed several factions of the Rith, K'Rinn and Human species, this ship was primarily used by human smugglers who supplied pockets of planetarist activists in policorporation space. Some vessels were also adapted for use by K'rinns and Rithai, and mixed-species crew were not uncommon. With the advent of peace and the creation of the Commonwealth of Spacefaring Species, the ship has seen incredible success. Its use of modular, standard cargo holds and its planetfall capabilities have been put to use in many settings. These images were done using the excellent DoGA L3 package and composition was made using GIMP.

Hi thecytron, Thanks for your comment and appreciation ! I'm a 3D dummy but I use DoGA to draft ships for the Hoshikaze universe. The base idea is to give visual hints on engineering and history of spacefaring in that universe...

Excellent design! I like the centrally mounted power unit.

Thanks for your comments ! @e-brink : it only makes sense ^-^ - Shields must be centrally mounted to cover the whole ship and they are one of the most energy-hungry systems on the ship. - Warp engines must be near the CoG and either on the longitudinal centerline or symmetrical. On this ship, they must be orientable, so they must be amidship. And they're also one of the most energy-hungry systems... - Also, this helps to have a one-piece central frame, to which cargo hulls can attach, leading to an easy exchange of fully loaded hulls at starports. Some other classes have a tug at each end, actually leading to 2 ships in one. Good for safety but more expensive to operate and need for delicate to tune and synch systems, like overlapping shields... For contraband runs, the Caravelle is well fitted : - It can land planetside thanks to its pivoting engines and (not shown here) very high landing gear. - A few power loaders and an available empty hold is everything you need on the landing field. Unlock the cargo and put the empty hold in place within minutes, and the ship can take off with minimal risks of the landing ground being detected. The ground crew then unloads the hold and reuses it with the next ship to come. Holds can be exchanged between many ship models, most have buildin or optional attachment for mutiple standards.
