Description

The Carnival Miracle is a good size ship. There are many smaller and some bigger. When you are sailing around the Caribbean or Mediterranean, in a 959.6 foot (292.5 meter) long ship, carrying 2,670 passengers, plus 920 crew members, they don’t let you sail into port and dock it yourself. There are licensed pilots, in each port, that are brought out to the ship and s/he brings in the ship in and slides it into the assigned docking spot. When you are arriving in port, the pilot boat comes out, to meet the ship and transfers the pilot to the ship. When you are leaving a port, the pilot walks on to the ship and the pilot boat has to chase the ship out into open water and pick up the pilot. This transfer of pilots is interesting to watch. We have seen pilots jump onto the pilot boat and onlookers cheer, if he lands on the pilot boat safely. This pilot, from the port in Aruba, used a ladder and the crowd was disappointed. The orange boats hanging on the side, are the lifeboats. I took this shot from deck 11, two months ago. Zoom would be cool! Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Aww gee, they take all the fun out of it, LOL. I have never been on a cruise, so I didn't know about the pilots in each port. I just assumed that the captain or first mate brought the ship in. Interesting!! And a great shot! Hope you had a great time! Isn't it time for you and your wife to start heading back up here? grin

Great shot Dana. The biggest cruise ship I have ever been on is the English Channel ferry!

Military vessels follow the same rules - they have to bring the pilot on board to guide them into and out of the port Great capture, Dana

Permission to board! Permission granted! Wow, what a bloodthirsty crowd, daring the pilot to jump, to what might have been his undoing. Superb capture of the subject matter, Dana, including the ocean texture.

jumping would seen fool hardy.I bet the ladder is not all that safe.my first experience around ships was when I lived in Houston and I learned about the pilots that would bring in the ships.supposedly because they would have more experience than a stranger
