Description

The view is from Calle Sarandi east through La Puerta de la Ciudadela, a modified remnant of the colonial citadel that dominated the area before its demolition in 1833. Immediately behind La Puerta is Plaza Independencia and the Mausoleo de Artigas, which is topped by the east-facing 17m high, 30-ton statue of the country's greatest hero. (Jose Gervasio Artigas Arnal June 19, 1764 - September 23, 1850. Artigas is a national hero and is sometimes called 'The father of Uruguayan Independence').
