Description

These creatures are also called "Horny Toads". Of course, they are not toads, but lizards. There are fourteen species in North Americas, eight of which are in the USA. Four of the species can squirt a small stream of blood from their eyes for several feet. This blood is a deterrent against canids (dogs and coyotes) and cats, who would eat them. This blood tastes foul to them. Their diet is insects and ants. Just about anything goes. Growing up in the American southwest (Arizona and Nevada), I've seen some that seemed to prefer red ants, and others that would not eat them. To each their own tastes, I guess. I loved playing with these horny toads... you can tickle the sides of their bellies and they will turn side to side. :) Saw them when I lived in Odessa.
