Description

This shot was taken last September, after I first returned to China from the USA. The name of the town is Gaoyao (Guy-Yow) and is just across the bridge from Zhaoqing on the north bank of the Pearl River. This is a factory where tea tables are made, and dragons are carved, by hand. Most of the tooling is done by hand, however the basic shaping is done using machinery you would find in any carpenters box. Sanders, routers, saws and the like. This was not the most exquisite piece in the shop. I almost did not save it for post work, but then decided I would use it as my opener for the new series I will show from Gaoyao. The next dragon is sure to blow your mind. I am not much for tea, however, elephants and dragons are among my favorite animals. In Chinese dragon is often pronounced as Huángdì, which also is the word for Emperor. This is why the Asian Dragon is so revered in China. Only the panda comes close to the devotion Chinese continues to show for this mythical creature. Be certain to open the full view. You can see the splendid details of these creatures scales, tongues, and eyes.

Fantastic dragon sculpture. You did a great job bringing out the details. I have always wanted to try my hand at carving an elephant.

That is a stunning piece of wood working, your shot does a good job of showing off the craftmanship.
