Description
I am going back to last July to show you an example of how these trees grow and what they look like before they are harvested.
This is some form of a Mangrove Tree. It has long streamers which look like hair and remind me of Spanish Moss. The streamers, when they reach the ground can gain roots. Though these trees in Hong Kong were not planted with the intentions to transplant or to be harvested, it does demonstrate how the Chinese plants their trees.
As you can clearly see, the trees are planted above the surface. I hope to be able to get to some newly planted trees to show you, in the meantime bear with me as I describe how they will dig a shallow hole, then line the sides of it with brick, like they were building a cistern for a septic field, or drain field. The bricks are not mortared together, the holes help for drainage.
They will then continue laying bricks for another 1 to 2 feet above ground, then fill this brick made "POT" full of dirt. If the tree needs to be transplanted, it is easier to dig out this way. Because half of the population still lives in the countryside as subsistence farmers, labor is, well, dirt cheap! But having a tree in a kind of pot does helps save time, labor, and a tree, when the it is less mature than this one is.
In any case, here you can literally see how the trees were planted "High" above the lower surface where a sidewalk was added.
I hope you enjoy viewing as much as I did showing, and explaining. Please stay tuned, next we will visit a stone cutter and see some remarkable dragons carved from American marble.
