Description

You may notice that ship looks to be floating in water but this is not so. The underside is a rusty hulk and full of holes and this 'water' is encapsulated in sheets of clear plastic so that the underside can be kept heated to prevent more decay. The public are able to walk around under the 'water' to inspect the hull and to touch. She sits in the dry dock where she was built in the 1830's. She 'sprang a serious leak in the 1930's in the Falkland islands near Stanley the capital and was abandoned to her fate. She was refloated as a rusty old hulk in the 1970's and put on a barge and towed the 8000 miles back to her birthplace and is now a Maritime Museum. Her journeys took her over a million miles to all parts of the globe. Work on her continues.

Wonderful old ship, and in her defense she has thoroughly outlived The Great Eastern!!!!!! I wonder how she will fair against the Thames Tunnel (another of Brunel's gals)!

It pleases me when I see old ships, both Naval and Civilian restored and displayed. They finally get the respect they deserved.

Fantastic POV and, in zoom, a gorgeous figure head. Wonderful information Jeff, I was wondering about the water vs a wooden ship. Dana

Great capture. We were living in Wiltshire when the ship returned as a hulk! Great to see the result of all the work. Splendid historical vessel.

I've read about this ship but had no idea of how it got home! I'll be back to read more and comment more. See you will be coming to the USA soon. Too bad our paths won't cross...we'll both be touring in different directions:-( Enjoy the Grand Canyon however you get to see it. I'll be looking forward to your tour photos.
