Description
For a Great Blue heron to survive s/he has to eat on a regular basis. With this drought, fishing spots are drying up. Big Blue is an older and smarter heron. He has learned to walk out of the water before trying to swallow his catch. In the top photo, in this collage, you can see that this fish has been speared instead of caught. He had to leave the water, shake the fish off his bill and pick it up again. Zoom will not help on this posting!

Very good catch. I see them catch quite a few crabs around here, especially in the river which is about 2 miles from the ocean. The whole thing then somehow fits down that throat of theirs! I never know whether they are freshwater crabs or saltwater that have moved upstream.

I was watching how bears fish and the older ones would walk out of the water too to eat they fish. The TV did show one young bear trying to eat his in tehwater but the fish got away. wonderful shots here
