Description

15-small portrait studies on one sheet of paper! I knew it was foolhardy at the time but the passage of time places the group in a different light. So a few words on the methods used. At that time I had joined a portraiture class for beginners and was struggling to capture the likenesses of the various sitters provided. Extra practice was needed and a little every-day technology was pressed into service. Modern television sets and their associated recording equipment enable likely subjects to be frozen on the screen at will, and for the moving image to be explored frame by frame. This, in essence is how I worked, so the fifteen images now become a record of people who found fame or employment at the time and who might now have been forgotten. Remember I live in the UK so the "fame" may have been quite local, though many people might recognise our prime minister at the time and perhaps one or two of the others. One thing I now find interesing is how a likeness is mostly captured despite the lack of apparent brain-hand control. It begs the question of what is the more important. The search for individuality is always valuable and it is intriguing to realise that a lack of skill isn't necessarily a disadvantage. My apologies for the profusion of words but they tell of something. Cliff

Interesting results - strictly digital manipulation, or done with just paper and pencil? If the latter, did you copy a photo frame, or do from live observation?

Hi Chesscanoe, Sorry I should have been more informative. The picture is as scanned though the paper was too large for the scanner and required two separate passes, with the two images being knitted together in Painter. That was simplicity itself, of course. There is no digital manipulation. whatsoever, apart from a little sharpening to compensate for having to reduce the size to comply with Rendo requirements. As to the frames they were actually drawn on the paper using pen and ink beforehand, and the pictures drawn within the spaces provided. This ensured a degree of standardisation. Cliff.

Cliff, I am so surprised at you, for not showing this side of your artistic skills before this. Without knowing what the models look like, I can only assume you have captured their essence, and have made reasonable reproductions of their images. I am more than impressed by your skill. Thank you for sharing this, and keep the surprises coming. :)
