Description

The eastern lubber grasshopper is mostly limited to Florida and eastern Texas of the US. Some may be found in the Carolinas, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. It is well known for its unique coloration. The wings offer little help with mobility for they are rarely more than half the length of the abdomen. This species is incapable of flight and can jump only short distances. Mostly the lubber is quite clumsy and slow in movement and travels by walking and crawling feebly over the substrate. This is considered a nymph, an immature grasshopper and differs dramatically in appearance from the adults. They are completely black with one or more distinctive yellow, orange or red stripes. Adult are usually 2 to 3.5 inches (6 to 8 cm) long. They will molt five times – every 15 to 20 days and changing colors until adulthood with normal grasshopper coloring. The lubber contains toxic substances and thus they have few predators. Info from the University of Florida of Food and Agricultural Sciences. This photo taken yesterday, in the Loxahatchee National Wildlife refuge. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

What a gorgeous shot and a fantastic, cooperative model! I just love it when I come across a new breed of toxic animal (well, new to me) and well...this is gorgeous! Summer's coming and this shot alone has inspired me to go looking for more wonderful 6-legged people! This rocks!
