Description

Can you imagine 1,840-1,680 million years ago? Or 1,200-740 million years ago? Or 525-505 million years ago? Or, or, or... How about a mere 5-6 million years ago when the erosion of the Grand Canyon began? The numerous layers of different colored rock seen slice by slice as the Colorado River carves a one mile (1.6km) deep canyon reflects time as we can barely understand it...but it is right there for all to see. Gives one pause to think about the shortness of a human lifetime compared to that of the earth upon which we stand. Bill P.S. Time of the day matters a great deal at Grand Canyon. This was taken about 3pm in the afternoon. Next time we'll stay overnight and go for sunrises and sunsets. "Backdrop" thumb_2196299.jpg

Lovely Bill. I enjoy a program called 'Time Team' where they dig for evidence of past civilizations etc. I'm always amazed at how much 'top soil' each generation adds to the mix.

Interesting that the thin caprock in this small promontory can support the junipers. My first reaction to the image was "Masada" in small scale. Good pic, Bill.

Not only can I not imagine 1,840-1,680 million years ago, I can hardly remember living during World War II. Or even where I put my TV remote last night. A magnificent display in this pic of the rock clarity, lighting and textures, contrasted against the mighty depth and colors of the distant portion of the Canyon, Bill. And, incidentally, before the Big Bang, there was no such thing as Time.

A wonderful outcrop in the Grand Canyon with a superb bg. Time means nothing when you are on holiday, just enjoy it. Excellent capture.

It's just incomprehensible, Bill! At least it boggles what's left of my mind. The beauty of this place is also far beyond what any words can express. I've seen it once, and it's a memory that will stay with me always. I hope to get back there someday, now that I have a decent camera! LOL! Fantastic capture, my friend!

Very beautiful shot. It does kind of remind us how small and temporary we are, but also serves a different notice to me: everything changes, at its own rate, in its own way, and we're a part of that change. Fascinating photo!

It is amazing what water will do to rock in 5 or 6 million years.Awesome view.

Beautiful image! I love the brightness and sharpness of the foreground against the canyon, and the haphazard look of the rocks, like a child's blocks ready to tumble. I'm hopeless at even the more manageable fractions of time. Millions of years? Forget about it.
