Description

OK ! if the world was on an even keel, todays post should have been titled something like "Nose Job" (for Penters).....it's not.... This was an ambitious little project from the off, the plan was one model with some bits and pieces to give different versions. There were going to be problems, there were problems, some of which I 'fudged'.The BIG problems had to come with transitioning between the 'E' and later models. It's in yesterdays text, the plane changed dramatically.I'd already covered part of this with a second wing, I added a new spinner and ploughed on.As we all know, if things are going too smothly, life has a funny habit of throwing a spanner in the works.....my 'spanner' is called 'Penters'.He saw straight off, what I already knew, E + new spinner + new wing does not = F. I could have thought "It's just one comment" and carried on, but I went back and had another look at the render. It still looked wrong, then I thought, the wingtip's not curved enough...self doubt is a poweful kick in the backside and soon the whole thing just looked BAD! I then began to list options. 1. Here it is,take it or leave it....I'd never be happy with that one. 2.Cut the nose off and reshape it......this renders completed textures useless, means a second fusilage and so destroys the original purpose. 3.Scrap the original plan for 'one model fits all', release the D, E version and make a new F+ version.Given the availability of Bazzes much more polished model thats pointless, and starting a new F+ makes all I've done up to now only fit for the bin....not an appealing prospect as I've spent several hours working on this up to now...Two final options, burn everything to disc and file away until I have a bright idea (that could be a very long time ) or just forget the whole thing, bin it and move on to something else....my least favourite option....so what have I descided ?..well, I haven't yet...your thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Some of you may be sitting there wondering why I would be so affected by one comment.Well it's not the comment, it's the commenter, I have so much respect for David, he has always been there with his 'little' spanners that I hope have led to better models. He is a true artist who deals in detail, and he used one magic word 'fundamental', which is what this is really about, a fundamental flaw in my plan.I'm not sure yet were this will lead, but I HOPE it will be to a post entitled 'Nose Job' (for Penters).....but!

Bit of a pickle I agree, I can understand where your coming from, you only want to do the best and you've put a lot of work into this project. I would hate to see you trash it, I would love to have the D,E version and you work on the F at your leisure and release it when you think it's up to your standards. But I'm selfish and bias, I love your model's, thats all I can say. What ever you decide to do is OK by me, and I'm sure everyone else! You've given so much without asking for anything in return, all I can do is appreciate you, not question you.

Oh. I thought it was Tailspin who got grounded for some dangerous in-air prank! This is a completely different question - will it fly, or not? Perhps we shouldn't let Tailspin in on this one. :) Humour aside, I tend to agree with warder348. You've done such a great job thus far. Be happy about the successes. Mull a bit over the "how-to" with the F variant. You may very well be able to use a revised F as the basis for the later models. So, make it a good one, even if it takes some time and work. I must say, I'm still amazed at how quickly you have been able to produce aircraft of all types. We have the patience to wait the time you need to get the F perfect! Go for it, Neil! It will be a great plane, as so many of your previous successes! Chin up! We all need a critic to help us see the weak spot and rise to the challenge (I had one such incident at work today). :) Keep up the good work! Now, how to get a 3d texture onto a plastic model. Hmmm..... :-)

I can only say that many of us have been well pleased with your products and appreciate what you have done. We all hit roadblocks from time to time, so don't get too discouraged.

You are doing a great job, but like you say a one model fits all seems too ambitious. It seems you are becoming a bit burnt out on this and I suggest releasing the D and E and taking a break and work on something else while you gather steam to finish the F+. Bazze is a hard act to follow and I think if it is your plan to do better than he, that you will have to slow down some, take breaks, and not be hard on yourself.

Neil, DO IT RIGHT, simple as that, if someone points out a problem sort it, it's bugging the hell out of me, but since I am on Froggies library take 3, I personally need it (quality control has always been a problem to me) and i think it's working, possibly, perhaps, maybe? PS - I don't do anything anywhere near as complicated as you but so far (today alone) have spent 5 hours buggering about fixing things people have noticed is wrong - why? 'cos they're right! Hope this helps (annoying as it may be!)

It's your spanner here...sorry for causing you sleepless nights, it was'nt my intention to make life difficult. I think the best bet is to set the problem to the side for a day or so. I have my own couple of personal critics that I run my work past and it;s amazing some of the mistakes they find. Sometimes it's a pain to correct a flaw, but with the sort of work we do certain details can make or break an image.

I do love the frustration evident in your poser person. Well Neil you are certainly a perfectionist and there is no doubt about it. I would go with the burning the whole thing onto disc option and walking away from it for a while. Come back to it in a few months with a fresh mind. I get stressed by the inadequacies of my animation and writing all the time. I have a novel that I wrote in 2003 which I have revised several times and still haven't had the nerve to submit. When the doubts creep in it can be really hard to get a sense of perspective. Just keep on doing what you do, you have to take the dogshit with the diamonds as they say somewhere.

Neil buddy, I feel for you, I know exactly where your coming from, having been there myself. The doubt, the chucking of the model into the virtual trash bin, then the inevitable "I'll start from scratch again " conclusion. Been there & done that countless times. You have been doing an amazing job, but in this render, looking at the nose of the plane, something is off. When I get stumped, I take a break, work on something different until my sub conscience gives me the solution, as you can see on my last render went from the desert rats to the umbrella danglers. It seems to work for me, but preserver, you'll come up with an other little gem of a model.

Know what you mean! I have numerous projects that just don't "look/work right". Sometimes they sit for a great while and then I pick them up and work on them again only to set them aside, because they still don't "hack it". What you've done is not "fit for the bin", it's only a stepping stone to soemthing else. Sit on it for a while, it'll come!

Take your time dude... Split it into D and E as a package.. Then a mega cool F.. And maybe an even cooler G! Or put F and G into the second package, that way you have two in each.. As for the 'finer' details, I can offer no better than Penters.. I am rubbish compared to most artists, I certainly don't make them.. I KNOW aircraft, but not construction of the render models.. That is your dept! so, I still think you have moved on a class Neil.. Believe me.. Your renders and the models are magnificent.. Well done.. Rob PS: Arrive at Rosy's Tuesday..
