This is a most intriguing technique, Jim. It reminds me of the 'glass hemisphere' mapping algorithm in UF. At least the domed areas look like magnifications of the surrounding structures and there is an index of refraction effect in the domed zones. In any event, it is a fascinating rendering and altering the lighting gives an interesting jeweled effect.
