Description
This phenomenon is in the Black Hills of Wyoming, it rises 867ft from ifs base and is about 1000ft in diameter, the top covers 1 1/2 acres. This a sacred place for many Indian tribes to this day and many prayer offerings in the form of knotted cloth can be found tied to the trees around the base.
It is thought to have been formed about 50 million years ago by an igneous intrusion which in laymans terms is an upswelling mass of magma which then solidified. The surface of the land in those times would have been several thousand feet higher than now and millions of years of erosion have left it exposed.
All these words are my own attempt at an explanation from what I have read so if you are interested I am sure you can find it in your search engine under the title.
This is an American National Monument.

Wonderful PoV. Is this the one in Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind? I recall it having a similar name. I like your explanation. Very clear.

Not sure about 'Close Encounters' Dragonmuse. If you look at the columns you may see that they are similar to the ones in the 'Giants Causeway' in Northern Ireland.

Most unusual rock-formation - but then again it may well be solidified lava, which makes this absolutely surreal looking, a fine composition Jeff, and an everlasting impression of your holiday, BB

Super POV and capture Jeff. I have yet to explore the north western states that you are showing us. I can't wait for my next field trip. Nice info also. Dana

Apparently this was the first ever National Monument, so designated in 1906 by President Teddy Roosevelt. (He was responsible for a lot of National Parks and the like. He's also the third face at Mt. Rushmore, the one with the eyeglasses.) This is a wonderful shot, and your information did, indeed, send me off to see what else I could learn. Thanks!
