THE REASON FOR THE PROBLEM
Following on from yesterday and my continuing ABIS story.
It’s was one of the those strange occasions when only a few short softly spoken words can bring complete and utter silence to a room full of busily talking people.
As the individual made his statement all discussion on the subject stopped and all heads turned. At another time and another place it might have been considered comical for something like this to happen, but comedy was the last thing on anyone’s mind this day.
“You will have to forgive me” said Carter “and I do apologise for the lapse in memory, but whilst I know virtually everyone else in this room, your name escapes me for the moment”. “That’s ok” said the individual. “My team have only been up and running for the last few months whilst many others in this room have been with you from the outset”. “The names Johnson sir, Matt Johnson and I head-up your newly created PAM Division here at KSC”. “So Mr Johnson, tell us” said carter, “what’s the answer to the problem that we have been struggling so had to find and why have you waited until now to speak up“?
“I’ll answer the second question first if it’s ok with you” said Johnson. “I wanted to wait to see if an answer to the problem would present itself before speaking out as the answer my people have come up with might be considered just a little bit radical and as the PAM Division is not directly related to the incident under discussion I felt it only right that those areas related to the incident had their say on how to address the issue first”. “OK” said Carter. “We have been there; done that, got nowhere, let’s hear what you have to say”. “The floor as they say is all yours”.
Rising from his chair Johnson crossed to the huge wall mounted computer display screen, logged-on to the screen’s computer terminal and inserted his pen-drive. Calling up a file he presented in graphic animated detail a replay of the events which had taken place just over six months before. “You will I hope forgive what I have to do to make my point” said Johnson. “To get to the place I would like to take you we have to start with the events that brought us here in the first place”. Launch of the Hercules and its ML test article payload appeared on the screen, the booster cleared the launch tower, started its accent toward space and minutes later exploded in a billion pieces when Carter had pressed the self destruct button after POGO became so violent and uncontrollable that he had no other option.
Turning Johnson addressed the room, “That’s what happened then, here’s what we believe is the cause, followed by the solution”. “We have theorised that whilst the booster was fully loaded with fuel on the ground, the pressure of the fuel on the outer walls of the booster kept the entire mass structurally sound from being crushed by the weight of the Test Article above it”. “Once the booster launched, and fuel was used and the tank started to empty, POGO occurred as the booster lost its structural integrity”. “We have theorised once again that as the booster moved upward through the atmosphere, downward air pressure on the ML-1 Test Article’s large cross-sectional area caused the boosters tank to buckle and it could no longer retain its structural integrity”. “In other words the Test Article and the booster got into a fight and the booster lost”.

Give that man a ci'gar! very plausible explanation...the solution, should be very interesting...excellent narrative, simple enough to hold the attention and detailed enough to be plausible......
