Description

The solution to the problem ?????? Following directly on from yesterday and my continuing ABIS story Everyone who had been looking at Johnson’s presentation at his end of the room now turned toward Carter at the opposite end to hear what he had to say. It was one of those very rare occasions when everything that could have been said had been said. The facts that Johnson had presented were undeniable, the booster had failed, whilst at the same time his reason for the failure was also undeniable - undeniably true. “My god that’s it” said Carter. “We have all been looking only at the booster as the cause of the problem”. “No one ever considered an outside factor could be the real cause of what happened”. “So what’s to be done Mr Johnson”? “You say you also have a solution, we would very much like to hear it”. Turing once again to the wall screen’s computer terminal Johnson called up a second file and brought that into play on the huge screen. Once again Hercules and its ML-1 Test Article cleared the tower but this time the flight was flawless and on reaching the very edge of space the Test Article successfully detached and its own forward inertia carried it into low Earth orbit and the waiting Orbital Shuttles. “That’s the full presentation file to illustrate a successful flight” said Johnson. “Now I’ll play you the details of that flight so you can see in clearer detail what we propose to correct the initial problem”. This time after clearing the tower the picture seemed to freeze frame and then zoom in on the underside of the ML-1. What could be clearly seen were a series of four large PAM rockets attached to the underside of the Test Article. The picture then zoomed back out and the flight continued only to once again freeze frame and zoom back in a few seconds later. “It’s at this point that POGO starts to occur, but we believe that if at exactly the same moment this happens the PAM’s are ignited and throttled-up their upward thrust pressure on the underside of the Test Article will negate the downward thrust of air pressure from above”. “The PAM’s we suggest using are variable thrust so that as the Hercules fuel tank drains more and more of its fuel and POGO once again continues to occur we can continue to throttle-up the PAM’s once again to counteract this”. “It’s also important to note that whilst the PAM’s will have sufficient strength to counteract and balance the downward thrust on the Test Article from above they will not have sufficient thrust to lift the Test Article off the top of the Hercules booster”. As Johnson finished is narrative he turned once again to the wall screens PC, logged-off and after removing his pen drive walked back to his seat and sat down. To be continued
