Description
Welcome To Bali!
As the sun came up we were still far out over the Pacific. After a stop on Guam to refuel and replace a part of one engine we set out on the final leg of the trip to Bali. The old 707s had narrow aisles, too narrow for food carts. As a result, the cabin attendants had to deliver our meals and snacks on hand carried trays. The trays were often upended whenever the plane hit some turbulence and soon the plane smelled like fruit punch. And then the air conditioning started to leak moisture onto the passengers. I remember feeling sorry for the cabin attendants. They tried so hard and seemed embarrassed at the situation.
At mid-afternoon local time I saw my first glimpse of Bali. We landed at Ngurah Rai International Airport where I met one of the locals. The stone carvers of Bali are supernatural. In fact, all the artwork I saw was superb. I will be posting examples as the journey continues.
I collected my backpack and, stepping out into the tropical heat and humidity, went looking for transportation into town.

To refuel and replace a part of one engine? I'm glad the repairs were successful. I remember being on a plane where the attendents had to carry trays down the ailes. I was thinking that I was glad I'd never had to balance trays while the surface below me bobbed and shook. Great narrative and wonderful images. I love seeing the shot of the fields. The stone carving is amazing. I can't wait to see more!

Nice work. I went to Bali on holiday within 3 months after the bombings back in 2002. There were very few tourist around and so I was constantly harassed to buy something. Anyway I really felt sorry for the Balinese. They are very nice people.

It seems the flight entertainment was a bit of a NO-NO ... and I was wrong - you didn't land at Denpasar, ah well - there you go! Ah yes and those carvings are legendary - I've got a mask and not to forget those Batik printed Sarongs and much, much more ... Don't forget to visit 'Ubud' ! BB
