Description

Leaving the airport terminal building I was immediately set upon by several of the locals shouting out the Indonesian national phrase, “Hey meester, where you go?” “Uh, Poppies Cottages.” “You come with me, I have much better place.” “You want to buy batik?” “Come and look my shop!” “You like phonography?” Breaking away I managed to reach the relative safety of a local taxi known as a Bemo (Baymo). These are teeny, tiny Japanese pickup trucks with camper shells attached. They are everywhere. Catching one is as easy as catching a cab in Manhattan. Just hold up your hand and one will appear. The Bemo dropped me off in a little seaside village named Kuta Beach. The sun was beginning to set as I trudged down Poppies Lane towards my destination.

seems your photostory is older. frome when are the pictures ? they look old, no more bemos like this around anymore. Was there first time in the late 80's. have a idea which gang this is (doesn't look anymore like this) phonography? .... what's that ? little seaside village named Kuta Beach.... yes, now for sure...many years ago thanks for the memories

I admire you, stepping out into the unknown. Of course at that age, nothing can happen to you that isn't an adventure. Still ... wonderful story!

It is all coming back to me as well, having also holidayed in Bali ... Ah,yes the famous Kuta Beach, every shoppers and surfers paradise, but there is more - I stayed at Sanur Beach, much quieter away from the madding crowds and children, who will sell you everything they can carry, dream on! I do remember also Poppies Lane, believe it or not ? thanks for the memories, Mark, BB

I am really enjoying this adventure! I'm late and will be tagging along behind for a bit, but I'm still with you. I love your descriptions. That path looks long and narrow and long. It's quite beautiful, bit I think if I had been newly arrived, with backpack, cramped muscles, and too little sleep, the operative word would have been long. Great images and narrative!
