Description
Back when I first visited Kuta, before the local authorities became involved, the beach was wide open. It was the Wild West. Every morning two great armies would face each other by the ocean. On one side were the locals with something to sell. On the other side were the tourists who wanted to lie on the beach under the sun until they looked like lobsters. Pretending you were asleep was no protection. The typical exchange would go something like this:
(poke, poke)
“Hey meester!”
(poke, poke)
“Hey meester, you awake?”
“What?”
“You want massage?”
You might try being polite.
“Tidak” (no)
You could try being rude.
“Tinggalkan aku sendiri!” (Leave me alone!)
For those in the know, however, there was a secret, sure-fire cure for such disturbances.
“Saya tidak punya uang.” (I have no money.)

It used to be like this in Mexico and still is in some places. At the big resorts, however, each place has a special area where the vendors can go. If you choose to sit there, you're fair game!! Cool collage!!

I can feel the annoyance from here! (Mine, were I in that situation.) Yikes!

I do remember these situations so well, when I visited Kuta Beach, that's why I stayed at Sanur Beach ... but you have to experience it only once, to know better & learn the language pronto ! they are cute kids - but streetwise! (or streetsmart as in the US language) thanks for the memories again, Mark BB

Funny narrative and great images! There is such energy and activity on the part of the locals. I can imagine the tourist striving to do absolutely nothing in total peace...and failing. I love the top right image, with locals of all sizes, sizing out the opposing army.

Great images and story.. I think if more of us traveled like you did, we might appreciate what we have in our own towns and cities that we take for granted.
