Description
I awoke to my first full day in paradise eager to begin my exploration and ready for new adventures. First I had to take care of a few things and headed towards a small building where the bathroom was located. The Indonesians have a wonderfully euphemistic term for such a facility, Kamar Kecil – The Little Room.
Budget travel generally has some advantages over expensive tours. These include reasonable accommodations, cheap eats and the experience of really getting to know the local inhabitants. Of course budget travelers must also make some compromises. These compromises are usually unknown until one arrives at their destination. Those of you with delicate sensibilities may want to stop here and move on to something else.
And so it was that I looked with horror at The Little Room. There was a squat toilet with footprints helpfully embedded to show you where to place your feet. A red bucket and basin of water were provided for cleaning. Unpleasant, I know, but afterwards one could take a nice hot shower. No, there were no showers. Well then, a warm bath? No. How to bath? A red bucket and basin of water were provided for cleaning. And the concrete basin kept the water nice and icy cold. Not exactly the adventure I was looking for. The good news was that time spent in the bathroom tended to be extremely limited which left more time for other things.
A quick breakfast of black rice pudding and then off to the beach.
I am sorry if some of you have lost your appetite but I did warn you.

Somehow I've never fallen into the habit of taking things for granted. Sometimes I'll be doing my thing around the house and suddenly be totally grateful for indoor plumbing and electric heat. Odd, I know, but there you have it. I've heard tell of this type of accomodation! Thanks for sharing!

Ah, the little room...I can't say that I've experienced one of those and to be honest, I'm thankful for the things that leave many of us completely spoiled, and yet, I'd be curious of the experience of going old school and doing something so atavistic as...well...that one atavistic thing humans do regardless of where we're from. I do like the straightforward simplicity, however; I don't think I'd go for it on a daily basis, but the footprints seem to say: "Hey, this is where you do that! Why put a mask on so important a part of the day?" But that's just me, I'm odd like that. I really must say, too, that I love this little glimpse into another sort of life in another sort of place. Black rice pudding; I've never heard of that before and I'm anxious to try it. I think. I love this glimpse into elsewhere. This is great.

Absolutely necessary and scary - Oh weh ! But I am having a giggle - as to be expected - nothing surprises me, having travelled there as well ... LOL, we are indeed spoiled if you think about it and I wouldn't like it any other way - unless you want to end up with the infamous 'Bali-belly', say no more. fun addition to your travel-log, Mark BB

I can only imagine the speed of each visit! As for eupemisms, I think nothing is more quaint than your American 'Bathroom'....I have a bath, a shower and a washbasin in my Bathroom but NO water closet/WC/lavatory/toilet/bog/thunderbox..... In a household of more than one it's good to have these little rooms separate.

Indeed, it loses little time here, better get away fast! You can not spend less and have it all!

While I have experienced a similar toilet (though not so rustic, except one in my childhood, and that was Louisiana and a similar horror of a different sort) I have not experienced the red bucket and basin of water thing (I love your repeat of that. Very funny!) and I don't ever, EVER want to. I read a great book called "Flushed: How the Plumber Saved Civilization" and I think "flush" is a basic necessity of comfort. Flush, seats, soft toilet paper, and a small library. Very funny narrative and great, if chilling, image.

in many place still like this. first time for me was in Iran Jaya (West Papua)...for taking a bath i tried myself to squezz in the square bathtub (it was i little bigger!) ;-) for the toilet i prefer this one over every seating down one(who where sitting before you ? was (s)he clean ? did (s)he left some skidmarks ? or pee drops ? are these pubic hairs ..... too often seen in public toilets ! ) then ...to clean myself .... often the paper is empty/missing ! prefer this 100 of times! after washing with plenty of water (there might be even a soap or a shampoo) most of us will be much more clean as with any dry paper. When travel in Asia (always budget) if still find many of these kamar kecil.
