Description
Malmö Central Station
These are views of Malmö Central Station’s train shed seen from the north.
Can you identify the X-11 train playing peek-a-boo from behind the pillars in the upper photo? Hint: its front lights are on. :)
The original station was inaugurated 1856, and rebuilt after a fire 1872. The present train shed was completed in 1924. It is a fine piece of railway architecture. Malmö Central is Sweden’s second largest passenger station. It has at present 4 tracks underground (to the right of the main shed) and 6 (formerly 12!) tracks above ground, of which 5 were commuter tracks. With the opening of the City Tunnel and it’s through tracks, the number of tracks above ground could be reduced. Both the platforms, the waiting room and the Malmö rail yard are undergoing considerable reconstruction and modernization due to the tunnel and the bridge between Malmö and Copenhagen. These have greatly changed traffic patterns and increased the number of passengers. Over 45,000 passengers pass through the station per day (and that includes me!), accounting for some 350 trains per day, or scarcely 15 minutes between each.
The lower photos are of the right bay of the train shed approaching from the north, showing the beautiful laminated wood arches supporting the roof. The clerestory windows in the roof were to let out the smoke from steam locomotives. Today they provide light.
In the lower photos, an X-2000 express train has just arrived from Stockholm – a 4 ½ hour trip of 640 km. (400 miles) distance covered at 200 km. (125 miles)/hour.
Enjoy!

Ah, a railroad station to be proud of and I know you are...for very good reason. Wish we had the passenger service that you do...but for a million reasons we don't... Fine work on this collage Michael!
