Description
Modern day dinosaur? Looks menacingly hungry! Don't let it come near your house!
There were some 6 of these in different sizes at the construction site today. They kind of steal the show - "Mom", "Dad" and several smaller variants. This one I call "Mom". There's a larger orange one which I call "Dad". Looking at the details shows what marvels of technology these machines really are. I was thrilled as a 4 year old boy, but still feel an awe over the enormous power and complexity of them. And yet, the most complex stuff is hidden inside the engine cowlings.
Enjoy!

Haven't looked at any of these monsters in a long time so I went googling. Your shot inspired me. First steam shovel patent was approved in 1839 and the inventer was William Smith Otis, cousin of the elevator guy...Elisha Otis. How's that for an inventive family? Anyway, some fascinating history leading up to your diesel/hydraulic powered jobs. Learn something everyday! When I was a kid, everybody still called these steam shovels even though steam went away in the 1930s as diesel came in making smaller, less complex machines.
