Description

Corcovado (Hunchback) is a mountain within the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, located within the city limits of Rio de Janeiro, that raises straight up from the City of Rio de Janeiro to a height of 709m (~2,200-ft). On top of Corcovado is the 30m high Statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor). The statue weighs over 1,000 tonnes. The statue was originally conceived as a national monument to celebrate Brazil's 100 years of independence from Portugal. But in 1922, the 100th anniversary, money was not available, but in 1931 the statue was completed by French sculptor Paul Landowski, thanks to some financial assistance from the Vatican. This view is toward the southeast and shows Botafogo, a part of Rio de Janeiro, directly below Corcovado. To the left is Enseada de Botafogo. In the center are the 216m high Morro da Urca and the 394m high Pao de Acucar, the famous Sugarloaf Mountain. Both are accessible via cable car. People have to change cable cars at Morro da Urca to reach the top of Sugarloaf. At the right center are two high rises visible. These high rises are located along the Praia de Copacabana, the famous Copacabana Beach. This picture was taken on 17 June 2011.

Yay! You made it back! :D What an astonishing view! That's just gorgeous. You know, I don't remember having seen that angle before. The gently rounded islands are new to me. SO beautiful! Thanks for the viewpoint, and welcome home!
