Description

Here is another view from the multi-level observation platform at the base of the 30m high statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) on top of Corcovado Mountain. The mountain rises straight up from the city to a height of 705m. The view is toward the Northeast and shows in the center, immediately below the mountain, the Rio de Janeiro city part of Flamenco with its curving Praya do Flamenco (beach). At the center left is Centro (the business section of Rio) with the Aeroporto Santos Dument, the regional airport adjacent to it. In the distance is the President Costa da Silva Bridge, commonly known as the Rio-Nitroi. The box girder bridge spans the Guanabara Bay and connects the city of Rio de Janeiro with the municipality of Nitroi. The bridge is 13,290m (8.25 miles) long, 8,836m (5.49 miles) over water, and the bridge's central span is 72m (236.22-ft) high to allow ships to enter the harbor. The bridge was opened on 4 March 1969 and it eliminates over 100km of land travel. It is the longest prestressed concrete bridge in the Southern Hemisphere and the sixth longest in the world. Peeking out behind the tree at center right is the top of the 394m high Pao de Acuar (Sugarloaf Mountain). The urban development seen creeping up the mountain slopes in the lower left of the picture are favelas, slums, best to be avoided especially after dark. This picture was taken on 17 June 2011.
