Description

This statue, called Cristo Redentor, Christ the Redeemer, is 30m tall and weighs over 1000 tons. It is located on top of the 709m high Corcovado (Hunchback) Mountain and can be accessed via road or by cog train. It had been planned to erect this statue as a national monument in 1922 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Brazil's independence from Portugal, however due to a lack of funding it didn't get completed until 1931 by French sculptor Paul Landowski with some financial assistance from the Vatican. The statue is lit up at night and can be seen for miles. This photo was taken on 17 June 2011.

I love the simple lines of this statue, and the way you've captured it against that stunningly blue sky is perfect! (Clouds would have given a totally different feeling ... how clever of you to have ordered a plain sky for this shot!) The people gathered at the foot of the statue adds a nice touch to the symbolism. Nicely done, my friend!
