The machine that monitored her vital functions beeped incessantly next to her bed. She had vague recollections of an orderly tapping her arm and slipping a needle deep into her wrist. Only...she wasn't in hospital at all. She was in her uncle's apartment in Cologne. It was the day after Jack and Klaudia had arrived on her doorstep. She tried to wake up, but the desire to keep sleeping was overwhelming. She let the waves of drowsiness wash over her. Down, down she sank. Back into the blackness. Beep...beep...beep...
