Description
In 1987 I returned to Indonesia on the advise of my friends. They felt I had not given the country a fair chance on my first visit, having come home with a very low opinion of my experience. This time I was able to rent a motorcycle, which I do not recommend unless you have a highly developed death wish. Next time I visit I’ll be driving an automobile.
The advantage of hiring a car and driver is that they can take you to see the highlights of an area. The advantage of being on your own is the ability to get out into the non-tourist areas. Off the beaten path as it were. And so it was that I climbed aboard my mighty Honda 125cc motorcycle and headed out to see the countryside.
I passed through small villages where cattle roamed free and children swam in the local stream. Sometimes I would come upon women dressed in traditional Balinese clothing. This often meant that they would go about with their upper torsos uncovered although they always covered themselves whenever they saw a Westerner.
I took the picture of the rice paddy on this day trip. For almost twenty-five years I thought this was an image of a farmer walking across his field. Only when I began working on it for posting did I realize it was a scarecrow designed to frighten birds that might otherwise eat the crops.

I was so engrossed in your narrative that when I got to the end, I scrolled down to see the image and ... no farmer! I blew it up bigger. Still no farmer. Huh. Closed the full view window. Looked again. Thought, "Well, maybe he mis-posted the image (but that would be VERY un-Mark-like), and someone has already made a comment about it." Imagine my reaction when I scrolled down and saw a second image! LOL! Ahhh ... there is the scarecrow farmer. Excellent images!

Funny about the scarecrow! I had a Honda CB twin 125 which weighed rather more that my brothers 1000cc Suzuki does now. I couldn't get it back onto the stand with 48 cans of dogfood strapped to the pillion. So I got a Honda 90 stepthrough instead...centrigugal clutch, lightweight, ran it into the ground in the end after about 10 years.

As much I love to look at photos as more i love to look at yours taken some time ago. enjoy the before .... after and see what time has made. do you remember the location of the first picture ? guess it is somewhere near the beach...would like to revisit it. As I am a biker, I am always happy to be in Asia riding the "ladybikes". over 20 years ago they had in Bali for rent a 150cc Bintang (Kawasaki-licence) which where to big for the most of the people there (same price). Now they have the 200cc Honda Tiger but the price for the rent is nearly 3 times as for a automatic Yamaha 115cc which is only 10-20 km/h slower. So i save the money and one beer is free a day ;-) Ok sitting in a compfy car chair is much better for our old rear end, but the traffic especially in Bali multiplied soooo much over the last years, that the waiting lines on many traffic lights in Denpasar/Kuta/Sanur area are in km range. good for the bikes to bypass the cars. don't switch to car as love to explore 2nd and 3rd class roads/path which are not able to go with a normal car. have some nice footage (GoPro Helmet cam) of many of my trips, when ready uploaded to youtube will let you know

WONDERFUL REPORTAGE

I would have thought it was a farmer as well. Such a great write up on this. I rented a mo ped once in Lake Tahoe, thought it would be so fun parts of it were, but I had never rode one before so riding with street traffic was not too much fun, but I guess I survived. :)
