Description

Captured 5/26/11, in a pond on the second floor of the beautiful Aquarium of the Pacific, in beautiful Long Beach, California. ZOOM worthy! Latin: Oxyura jamaicensis Average length: M 15.4", F 15" Average weight: M 1.20 lbs., F 1.19 lbs. Description: The conformation of the small ruddy duck is distinctive: a short, thick neck; chunky body; stubby wings and a fan-shaped tail composed of stiff feathers. The male ruddy duck has a brilliant rusty-brown back, rump, neck, scapulars, chest, sides and flanks. The crown, rear ear coverts and hindneck are black, and the throat and sides of the head below the eyes are white. The bill is bright sky blue and the legs and feet are grayish. Although relatively silent, the male will give a "chuck-uck-uck-uck-ur-r-r" when displaying. Female ruddy ducks have grayish-brown neck and body plumage. The sides of the head and neck are dull buff-brown with a single dusky horizontal stripe crossing a pale-gray cheek patch. The bill is dark gray and the legs and feet are grayish. Females are relatively silent. Source: http://www.ducks.org/hunting/waterfowl-id/ruddy-duck. Even with a polarizer, there was a lot of water reflection, but the pics still look cool and keen. I like the facial expression in the middle photo; it reminds me of Jack Nicholson after he goes mad in the 1980 movie, The Shining. "Here's Johnny!" Toodles, thankx for the peek, and for any and all favs and laudatory comments.

This is certainly worthy of a zoom - spectacular contrast in colours, the gorgeous rusty-coloured feathers vs the blue bill, fabulous magic... not to forget the lovely clarity of the water! Had a giggle, with the comparison to Jack N. - you are absolutely right about 'that look' - it's so typical, when you study his expressions on the big screen closely! Thanks for sharing this missive, BB

What a beautiful duck! I love the range of shots showing us all his angles. You did well saving his colour and detail. I tend to shoot with the exposure way under for this kind of condition (actually most of the time!) which makes for dark shots, but Photoshop helps bring back light in the important areas.
