Description
...if this scene looks a little familiar to you, the reason is I've used this background before but at different distances.
...location is Cannon Beach, Oregon
...this distance disclosed all these birds taking a break from their normal meal hunting activities.
...of special note is the California Brown Pelican in the middle of the gulls (and a few more off to his right). They are a success story! They were listed on the Endangered Species List in 1970 and their recovery has been so good that they were delisted in 2008.

...once again, that is the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse a little more than a mile off shore. Imagine serving out there between 1881 and 1957...42 days on lighthouse duty, 21 days on shore duty.
[In the early years, duty was even worse. The keepers (four on the rock at all times) served three months on and two weeks off...until it was acknowledged that no keeper could take the isolation, the crashing seas and the constant blasts of the foghorn during fowl weather. A recipe for mental instability...yikes!]

Interesting photo. Not only the birds on the ground (suggesting a stiff wind), but the one in the air suggests those are 3 foot waves rolling in. Nice contrast between the waves rolling in and the rippled water in the foreground - shows it's really windy! As for the light house, it looks big and built high up, but earlier photos show how deceptive that is - the waves crashing onto the lighthouse. I'm surprised they were able to build it, and that it's still standing, considering the beating it's taken from the sea.

Excellent exercise in depth photography, Bill. And, yes, a definite Elysium for the birds, with no worries about being pestered by intrusive humans. But cabin fever (polar choler) a-go-go after serving in that lighthouse for 42 days. with no telephone, radio, television or Internet to keep one occupied during those early years.

A wonderful capture and that is great news about the pelican as they are great looking birds even if somewhat clumsy at times. Just think of those lighthouse keepers being out there for all that time without a computer......

Well when I saw the title, I thought maybe you'd got yourself a copy of Poser or Daz, Bill! LOL! Seriously, great photo! Great detail on the birds. and the distant lighthouse! Right now, that isolation sounds really good to me - but I'll bet it was hard to get a good night's sleep with that foghorn blaring all night.
