Description

The Mother Temple of Besakih, or Pura Besakih, is the most important, the largest and holiest temple of Agama Hindu Dharma in Bali, Indonesia. It sits on the slopes of Gunung Agung in eastern Bali 1,100 m (3,610 ft) above sea level. The mountain, at 3,142 m (10,308 ft), is the highest point on the island. The temple is actually a complex of twenty-two temples that sit on parallel ridges. The first recorded mention of its existence comes from an inscription dating back to 1007 AD. Since the 15th century, Besakih has been regarded as the central temple of Hinduism in Bali. On the far left: The main gate On the far right: The eleven roofed Meru to the supreme deity Acintya now known as Sanghyang Widi Wasa (the "All-In-One God"), a term invented in the 1930s by Christian missionaries to describe the Christian god to the Balinese.

A marvellous and complex roofscape, refecting an equally complex belief system. Those missionaries got everywhere..

I decided to go back and reread your recent(ish) posts to be sure I hadn't missed any and I had to comment on this one. I love this landscape of roofs with all its variation and unity. Its fascinating to study the different ones. I like the three, left of center that stand like a family group. Baby Bear, Mama Bear, and Papa Bear. I also like the two at the left and furthest back, that look like a single structure has been split down the middle and separated. Beautiful place and capture and interesting information.
