Description
A series of eruptions of Mount Agung in 1963, which killed 1,700 people, also threatened Pura Besakih. The lava flows missed the temple complex by a few meters. The saving of the temple is regarded by the Balinese people as miraculous, and a signal from the gods that they wished to demonstrate their power but not destroy the monument the Balinese faithful had erected.
The name Besakih comes from the word “Basuki”, derived from the word “Wasuki” which means Salvation in the classical Sanskrit language. Whereas, in the Samudramanthana mythology, the same name “Besuki” refers to the Dragon-God “Naga Besukian”, who inhabited Gunung Agung, the main volcano in Bali.

So many temples and so little time - to see them all ... Another Country - another religion and another place of worship, but these are worthy of another look ! wonderful capture, Mark BB

So much to see! I love the shapes. I'm afraid I'd get lost in all the detail there. How wonderful!

Marvelous POV and composition! I love the zigzag of the roofs accentuated by the partial capture of the one on the left. Gorgeous shot. My eyes are pulled deeply into the picture. I'm very glad they were saved, but would have a hard time worshiping a god or gods who made a point with 1700 people. Well, I'm not theistic anyway, but if I was...

I agree with Lucinda I always have a hard time with those theories, but then we can't change history. Thanks for sharing these Mark.
