Description
For you edification and pleasure:
Time: circa 1930s
The place a small town in Montana on the Great Northern mainline:
The head end crew and the conductor of a freight train are being briefed by the station agent for an unscheduled meet with a special second section of the Oriental Limited , a silk Train. The freight will be put in the ‘hole’ ( a siding) for the ‘special’. There can be no problems with the schedule of the ‘special’.
Silk Trains were just what their names indicated. They were loaded with silk from the Orient and had right of way over all other traffic. Millions were at stake for the most expeditious delivery of their valuable cargo. They were pulled by the fastest and latest engines which ran as fast as the road would allow. The Silk train won’t stop or might not even slow at this town but as it passes through the town folk will come out to watch it. It is an special event in the otherwise normal day to day events.
This picture is a kind of time machine. It progresses from what we see in most books and photographs from that era, black and white to approximate what it really looked like in real life. We tend to picture in our minds the black and white we see all the time in the photographs of those days. To most of us nowadays, the past is black and white. The present is represented by the spectrum of colors we see all around us. Most of us tend to perceive things in the present!
Or perhaps it is just as Calvin (from the Calvin and Hobbs comic strip) was told by his father. Until colors were invented the world was black and white! ;)

Excellent work. Intelligent comentary. Your thesis is supported in In Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, a psychologist who won The Nobel Prize in economics, where what is stated is that we have an automatic tendency to react to what is in front of us,no matter how slim the information and attempt to build a coherent story around it.. Nice blending of "color" with concept. My automatic reactin is, "I like it"!
