Description
Markus stood before the portal counting the Elven archers who were doing their best to hide from his sight. He was up to twelve when their king, Alathar strode through the ancient ruins of the Temple of the Seas. Markus' eyes widened at the sight of the Elf. Markus was 6'1", but Alathar towered over him.
"Greetings, Alathar." Markus said politely. "Your people told me you were at the cliffs enjoying the view of the Cataran Sea."
"Yes." He replied in a strong baritone. "I hope you'll allow me to visit this place once the war is over. That is a spectacular sight."
"You'll have to ask Marius about that. He will rule here. I will be king of Dragon's Reach."
"You don't sound happy about it." Alathar said with a smile.
"I thought I would be able to live a quiet, free life once this is over."
"You should have my life." The Elf said with a sigh. "I have been king of Arrochar for eight thousand years."
"You have a point." The Human nodded. "Besides, I've been told that this is my destiny, and that it can't be avoided."
"Trust me, Markus. If it could have been avoided, I would have run from the Throne." Alathar stared at Markus for several seconds before shaking his head. "You look much like your great grandfather, Baron Vaul Berson."
"My great grandfather was one of the men who sought to assassinate King Carl IV?"
"Both your great grandfathers are Baron Vaul Berson and Duke Alexander Tessa. I'm happy to see that you have inherited none of their lust for power. Which is nothing short of a miracle, given who has raised you."
"My mother said that you knew my father and his mothers."
"Very well. And I miss them so." The two were interrupted by an Elven woman in light armor.
"Majesty, the troops are ready to leave at your command."
"Very good." He told her before turning back to Markus. "As soon as they have gone to the Moss Plains, we leave for Dragon's Reach. You brother brings a message from the Demon Barran: how to defeat the demon army he will be forced to summon."
Thanks for the AARP comments. For some reason, turning fifty this month never bothered me until I got their mailing. Strange.
