Description

Every dance needs a band and if you are talking about the Barong Dance that means gamelan. Balinese music is based around an instrument known as the gamelan (gong). The gamelan is such a central part of Balinese music that the whole 'orchestra' is also referred to as a gamelan. The ensemble features xylophones, drums and gongs; bamboo flutes, and stringed instruments. In Javanese mythology, the gamelan was created around 230 a.d. by Sang Hyang Guru who ruled as king of all Java. He needed a signal to summon the gods and thus invented the gong. For more complex messages, he invented two other gongs, thus forming the original gamelan set. Gamelan's role in rituals is so important that there is a Javanese saying, "It is not official until the gong is hung." For those who are interested, here is a video to give you just a taste of gamelan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP4usMLrpYs&feature=related and one more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dIJtbS4QsU&feature=related So now you’ve met the band, sit back and enjoy the show.

I watched the videos: what enthusiasm! We used to have visits at school from the music specialists who brought various instruments from other cultures for our pupils to 'have a go'.

I was in an area where I couldn't view videos when you posted this, so I waited until we were back home and went back. Mesmerizing performances! It's easy to get caught up in the rhythms and sounds. Thanks for this!

Thanks for the links! It's great to have a sound to put with the images. I found another one which answered my question in my last comment, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmrN3VafSS8&feature=related Excellent images. I like the expression of the musician. It looks like he is really enjoying himself. Very interesting narrative and terrific images!
