Description
There was a time in the last century that we lived in that most of if not all our basis for food was delivered by the railroad and in box cars. The box car then pretty well much right up to late 1970's maybe very early 80's carried as the photo shows, corn, rye, flax , wheat, barely & oats plus a host of other consumer goods.
The markings inside the car indicated what commodity could be carried and at what level. Corn, & rye being heavier that other food stuffs were carried to the markings indicated on the box car wall. Barely as you can see could be loaded in more so & oats well could make the car filled. The reason for why they were marked so was because weight is a critical factor in transportation of any goods, be it sugar, loose or bagged, refrigerators or bolts of cloth. The weight unless evenly distributed and placed properly in the car will as the train picks up speed will cause the care to rock back and forth indicating that the load is higher than its markings this throwing the cars center of balance off this you get the rocking effect which if left unchecked and not corrected would cause the wheels to leave the track making the car over turn and causing a serious derailment, not to mention a huge loss of money & goods.
When the railroad was laid down to criss-cross the country, touching every city, town & village irregardless of size, and laying track into industries that helped to create & manufacture consumer goods, the box car was king and ruled over society to bring to us what we needed.
Think of the lowly box car for what it is, a box car, a carrier of materials and good, something that we nary give a thought to from one day to the next. Its a box car plain and simple nothing more. However to the fine people of Tracy, Minnesota they celebrate " Box Car Day " in early September for 3 days of fun, games, food, karaoke, hell they even have Dairyland Donkey Ball, that's gotta be a ripe good old time eh. This is the 84th celebration of " box car day " so the good folks in Tracey Minnesota must be onto a good thing to have celebrated 84 years of the lowly box car. What can you say...party on eh............thanks for the peek
