Description
A succession of castles has stood on this site since 1057. This is Inverness Castle and it sits on a cliff overlooking the River Ness, in Inverness, Scotland. The red sand stone structure in this photo was built in 1836 by architect William Burn. It is built on the site of an 11th century defensive structure. Today, it houses the Inverness Sheriffs Court. The castle itself is not open to the public but the beautiful grounds are. My intent was to be in London on the 50th anniversary of VE day (Victory in Europe) but I found so many castles in Scotland that this is the spot that I celebrated and watched the lighting of the bonfires. One of the small bonfire cauldrons can be seen to the left, in front of the Sheriffs car. Some info from Wikipedia. A 1995 photo scanned. Zoom works well here.

A beautiful capture of this lovely coloured castle it looks quite mellow. Those bonfires must have been great to see during the celebrations, especially from the air.
