Description

One of the best reasons to visit the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach, California is the butterfly sanctuary, an enclosure attached to the main building. It was here that I finally found a way to photograph butterflies. Find a place where they can't fly away. Also, at the sanctuary the butterflies are used to people and are less nervous. Offered tonight for your pleasure is the California State Insect, the Dogface Butterfly (Zerene eurydice). This is the female of the species. They are fast flying and hard to catch unless you can catch them sipping nectar at flowers. I got lucky.

'Dogface'. Hmmm. If you said that to a lady 'twould not go down well. A beautiful insect shot, Mark. In butterfly houses here ones lens steams up but I suppose in California it is already warm.

Very beautiful macro , Mark ! Personally I prefer the open spaces, absolute freedom, I take pictures and the animal not to be photographed. The challenge is exciting.

Oh this is beautiful. Our zoo and an aquarium in Chattanooga have butterfly areas and I just love it, did they show you how to pick them up? take your finger and put it towards the back of the wings underneath, and they will grab a hold.
