Description

Most people don’t realize that Southern California is a desert area. Even so, it has a wonderfully diverse ecosystem. A few examples are shown below. Diagonally from the top left is the Choya Güera, also called the Teddy Bear Cholla. I don’t think I would cuddle with this teddy bear. The center image is the California Poppy (Eschscholzia Californica). It is the official state flower of California. At lower right is the Nopal, also known as the Prickly Pear. The leaves are edible and are considered quite a delicacy. At the bottom is the Prickly Pear flower. Finally, I was unable to identify the pretty flower on the left.

What a wonderful collection of images! I spent seven months in Orange County in 1980/81, and I do remember the climate! Yuk. Not my thing. But hey ... somebody has to like to live in the rain. :P Your photographs show the best of that area. Nicely done! (Dennis was putting ice and beer in a tub. There were decorations involved.)

The Central Valley is also hot and dry so these also grow in my area, although, much of the valley is also agricultural with irrigation providing a great growing climate of high heat, high humidity and blistering sunshine. I have all of these, except the unidentified flower growing in my yard. The unidentified one I would think is a type of nightshade (belladonna). I had a white variety very similar to this growing 3 years ago and I never planted it ... it appeared on it's own.

Well I grew up in Southern California and poppies are one of my favorite flowers, if you have never been I would recommend highly a trip out to the Poppy Fields in the Antelope Valley in the spring, it is amazing to see. Beautiful collage...
