Description

"Go to the middle of the bridge and turn left." According to a local legend, these are the directions a Zanesville man gave a confused traveler more than 100 years ago. Since then, the phrase has remained a popular joke with Zanesville residents. This is the fifth bridge built spanning the area where the Licking and Muskingum rivers intersect. The first was open to traffic in 1814. Ripley's Believe It or Not featured Zanesville's Y Bridge as "the only bridge in the world which you can cross and still be on the same side of the river." And Amelia Earhart called Zanesville "the most recognizable city in the countryā€¯ because of the Y Bridge. Thank y'all for lookin' Manning

Amazing! I learned something new and wondrous today! And to top it off, I saw a gorgeous photograph as well. I've seen (or at least read of) all sorts of odd bridges, including bridges that zig-zag in order to keep ghosts from crossing them, bridges like the veins of a symmetrical leaf: all starting at one point on one side of the river and fanning out to seven or eight different locations on the other side of the river. I've heard of mythical Rainbow Bridge and science fictional dimensional bridges...but in all that I've read and all that I've seen...a Y-Bridge is very new to me. I'm amazed. And as I said, this is a fantastic photo as well. I love the sight of the bridge itself, but also the glimpse of the area it serves. Marvelous.

I love that...go to the middle of the bridge and turn left and be on the same side after you've crossed. Hilarious! But I cannot see enough of the water to see how you can cross and remain on the same side???
