Description

First, the volumetric sky was from Tim Payne at- http://www.sharecg.com/v/41622/3D-Model/Sunbeams-Example-Scene-for-Carrara-8?interstitial_displayed=Yes It is a great example scene that I have studied and plan to study more. This is the image that put me into render hell, I have tried to get this to render for three days. The sky was not the problem. It was having the boat with the sky. In order to get anti aliasing to look good on the boat it took for ever to render. And it crashed a few times. I had to keep switching the settings. I'm still not sure of the difference between global illumination and this render. I still got the sunbeams without global illumination ticked...

This came out really nice! Getting the sunrays is not a part of global illumination. If you want the sky to light the scene as well as the sunlight, then GI will work for you. My recommendation is to render the sky separate, put it into the background of this image, and re-render without the clouds. I think it came out great! If you have any questions, send me an email!

Great image. Love the water. To avoid global illumination (which does not play well with the clouds often), I'd fake it with the spot-lights surface-replicated on a half-sphere dome.

Well done to get this super render. I've been battling with a similar type scene in Byce 7 Pro and havn't yet managed such a clear and authentic render. I think the advice on careful use of spotlights and other lights will be useful to light the ship somewhat without affecting the wider lighting and sky. I'll persevere, now inspired by your fine scene!
