Description

This is Edinburgh Castle, taken from the streets below. Edinburgh Castle is a fortress which dominates the skyline, of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence, until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century its principal role was as a military base with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognized from the 19th century, and various restoration programs have been carried out since. As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions. Some info from Wikipedia. 1995 photos scanned. Zoom will help. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Very nice choice of position for taking this shot! Most take it from the front. And tell, after this shot you carried on into the Grassmarket for a wee dram? Wonderful shot and excellent POV! Martin

What a massive, imposing and impressive structure! Considering what it has been used for over various ages, massive and imposing it all it cold possibly be. I love the color of the stone work, the details, the sheer sense of scale. This is amazing work. Perfectly seen!

The 'collection' of all your castles here is mindboggling and thanks for all the info - I do see nothing like this ever here in 'OZ' - we are only over 200 years old - but the Aboriginals more like 4000 years ! thanks for sharing such historic treasures, BB
