Description

Why yesterdays POV: I had taken the train from Stirling and was walking up from Edinburgh's Waverley train station and Martin (m_j_s) is correct, I was in need of a Pub and a Pint. I had as much fun in the pubs as I had in all the places I visited. A fantastic way to meet the local folks and it was always a wonderful meal. This is the entrance off the parking lot. An invading army would have fought up an incline to get to this point. After breaching this gate, the invaders would have been trapped in a long narrow roofless hallway, with high walls on both sides. Defenders, on top of those walls would have been throwing down boulders and archers shooting down arrows. At the end of this hall, is the main entrance, to the fortress and you will see that in my next posting. Edinburgh Castle is a fortress which sits atop the volcanic Castle Rock. The summit of the Castle Rock is 430 feet (130 meters) above sea level, with rocky cliffs to the south, west and north, rearing up to 260 feet (80 meters) from the surrounding landscape. This means that the only readily accessible route to the castle lies to the east, where the ridge slopes more gently. The defensive advantage of such a site is clear, but the geology of the rock also presents difficulties, since basalt is an extremely poor aquifer. Providing water to the Upper Ward of the castle was problematic, and despite the sinking of a 92 foot (28-meter) deep well, the water supply often ran out during drought or siege. Some info from Wikipedia. 1995 photos scanned. Zoom will not help here. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Excellent capture! :) I guess they don't have any over weight guards by the shape of the guard house. ;)

Wonderful shot mate! As for his expression, your not actually meant to smile let alone look happy while on guard duty, although I think he might have taken that one a bit too much to heart! Class Dana!!

Super stellar clarity, patterns and textures in this superb shot, Dana, accompanied by the very interesting information. As for the guard, he takes his duties seriously and his stolid expression should not be denigrated.

So very surprising to see plaid pants in a uniform. I've never seen that before. And such contrasts, modern semi-automatic rifle, spats, plaid pants, the modern gatehouse in front of such old rich architecture.

Great scene and capture, Dana! Nice pants on the guard! One of my good friends have visited Edinburgh twice the last two years so in "envy" I might go there next year! The two statues must be Scots kings? :o)
