Description


This is the last chance to stop an invading army. At this point, the invaders would have been trapped in a long narrow roofless hallway, with high walls on both sides. Defenders, on top of those walls would have been throwing down boulders and spears - archers shooting down arrows. I am standing in that hallway, to take this photo and you can see how high up the defenders would have been and on both sides. The large iron gate would be dropped down and large thick doors would be closed. Once inside this gate it was hand to hand combat until someone won. Some info from Wikipedia. 1995 photos scanned.
