Description
Morpho peleides. A butterfly of central and South America.
In my experience, these butterflies do not like to sit still with their wings open. When they land, they close their wings. Sometimes a worn individual whose wings are no longer perfect will sit with wings open, but rarely a perfect one. It takes a lot of time and patience to get a good photograph. The under side of their wings is also very beautiful, and I will show you sometime. But the blue top side makes this one of my favorite butterflies.
The blue coloring is not pigment. It is refraction of light.
