Description

Urquhart Castle sits beside Loch Ness in Scotland, between towns of Fort William and Inverness. Though extensively ruined, it was in its day one of the largest strongholds of medieval Scotland, and remains an impressive structure, splendidly situated on a headland overlooking Loch Ness. It is also near this castle that the majority of Nessie (Loch Ness Monster) sightings occur. It is not known precisely when the castle was built, but records show the existence of a castle on this site from the early 13th century. The Tower house was a 5 story building. The entrance you see here was the second story and entered the Lords Hall used for intimate reception and dining. The area below was for storage and access to the water. The third story was the Lords private chambers. The forth floor was additional chambers. The fifth floor was a defensive platform, watchtower, turret chambers and attic type storage areas. The people that you see standing up there are on the fifth floor. To the left of the tower are the remains of one of the defensive Curtain Walls. Info from the Historic Scotland guide and Wikipedia. 1995 photos scanned. Zoom does help. Thanks for stopping by my gallery, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Lovely dude. I do have a slight complaint though. I find that big snake like creature with multiple humps very distracting in the scene. Try a different composition next time perhaps. ;) Here is how it looked originally. imagebam.com

A lovely capture but this castle has seen better days. Great that you can still climb up to the 5th floor for the view. I hope they restore it one day.
