Description

With all the cell phones and VOIP it is strange to see a landline phone sign the company that put this sign up went out so many decades ago, I can't even remember when the changeover happened. I don't even think that General Telephone Company is still in business....

I've found one remaining pay phone in my county.. about 35 miles from here... it isn't in service, just standing there like a hulking skeleton of some long dead dinosaur. outstanding capture Mike..

the phone lines up by the cabin are burried too - kinda funny when you think how the earth moves, why would you want to put the lines under ground? ... I know, gas and sewage are underground too = lol

Actually, there is still cabling in the ground so I still wouldn't dig there because you don't know if it's live or dead. There are still people with plain old telephone service (analog) but yes, pay phones seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur as Barry noted. Not necessarily a good thing if you don't have a cell-phone or VOIP. They merged with Bell Atlantic. I used to map telephone equipment - why I know.

Fascinating Mike...I did a little sleuthing and I think General Telephone disappeared in 1959 when it merged with Sylvania and became GTE...so you made an old find here for sure.

You would be in a serious world of hurt up here if you wanted to rely on cell phone service. Most people still have landline phones, the cell service is soooooooo sporadic you can go days before finding an area that your cell phone would work. Great capture of this old sign.

You really must've been on a back road to find this one, Mike! But land lines aren't entirely dead. My wife and in only had our disconnected this past week.

a really old sign, sort of miss those days myself where people are more dependant to other people than computers like today.

And the world turned upside down. Quite a find Mike. I still have my landline but use Magic Jack for long distance. Finally got a cell phone last September but never use it. Someday they'll drag me kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

a rare find, lol, and i was never good in mapping telephones as i had phones and voip. i mostly do my communication via email i get too nervous on the phone so nobody shall expect me to install skype or the like, only for chatting but not for speaking.
