Description

To reach the top of Sugarloaf Mountain requires two stages. The first stage is between Praia Vermelha (Red Beach) and Morro da Urca (Urca Hill), elevation 218m. The length of the cable between these two stations is 528m. The second stage is between Morro da Urca and Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain), elevation 394m. The length of the cable between these two stations is 750m. Each station has a souvenir shop, a small restaurant and restroom facilities. The Sugarloaf Mountain cable car was built by a German Company and started operation in 1912. It was at the time considered a daring enterprise (material had to be hauled to the top by mountain climbers) and the cable car operation was only the third in the world at the time. Since 1912 over 37 million visitors have used this system. In 1972/1973 the systems was modernized and the current, Swiss-built cabins for the cable cars, were installed in 2009. The cable also get periodically replaced. The Sugarloaf Mountain cable car operation is one of the safest in the world. Each car can hold 65 passengers. On an aside, each time one enters a car, the ticket gets scanned, whether it is at the beginning, at the intermediate station or at the top station. I thought to myself that they (the operators) were overly concerned with free riders. But it is not about that at all. Its about safety. The electronic count lets them know when maximum capacity has been reached (65), thus preventing overloading and possible disaster. The cable car in this picture is leaving the intermediate station for the top station. This picture was taken on 20 June 2011, Sig...

Wonderful POV. I like the way the structure frames the cable car. Great capture of the people looking out. A crowd of people with some who stand out. The lady dressed in white smack dab in the middle, the man holding his camera up to the space of the opened window, and the small child staring out on the left. Excellent shot!
