Description
Captured 6/21/11, on my second visit to the beautiful Aquarium of the Pacific, in beautiful Long Beach, California.
Better viewed via ZOOM.
Okay, it's not as ornate or elegant as an Andrea lion, but it makes up for it in sheer volume as a life sized replica of the huge cetacean mammal that inhabits the ocean. It is displayed for all to see hanging from the ceiling of the Aquarium lobby, and definitely cannot be missed on entry to the facility.
Since it's color is blue, I assume this is a replica of a typical Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus), a marine mammal belonging to the suborder of baleen whales (called Mysticeti). At 30 metres (98 ft) in length and 180 metric tons (200 short tons) or more in weight, it is the largest animal ever known to have existed.
As a side note, photo #3 shows a vacationing Santa Claus staring up in captivated wonder at this awesome leviathan.
That's it for today, thankx for dropping by, and for any and all favs and complimentary comments.

Amazing the size of those majestic creatures of the sea. It sure would be a thrill to see one in person.

Very cool collage Harry, and clever idea for the title

I agree with Dave, nice collage, and super title!

Excellent collage of this massive dweller of the deeps...I hope it's got good suspension supports being overhead and all! Santa looks a bit apprehensive, maybe he heard whale sounds? And the daylilies I posted today were taken with the SX10, since I haven't had a chance to get out with the new baby yet!

A very impressive exhibit you have captured here. I like his beady little eye looking at me. Maybe Santa is wondering how he could get it into his bag to give out at christmas. Excellent captures.

Yes, it is a Blue Whale! You would be hard pressed to find one over 90 feet long today, though in the late 1800s the larger ones measured 140 feet. Of course, they hunted the largest thus taking out that portion of the gene pool and the Japanese today are harvesting young Blues in defiance of a world ban on hunting the Blue Whale while falsely claiming to have discovered a smaller species. Money seems to trump everything!

Great and interesting shots and collage. The bearded man seems to be fascinated too.

Well, 'Santa' was probably awe-struck at the size of the blue whale! I know that at the aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts they have a wall that shows sizes of various ocean dwelling critters...and the blue whale is very humbling! I had the chance to go on a whale watch and see a 50 foot humpback whale...which was rather unsettling seeing we were only in a 30 foot boat, LOL...The first time he dove under the boat I thought I was going to wet myself...but he never touched the boat, but floated alongside it, looking up at us 'tourists'...an awesome experience!

Beautiful animal, replica, and shots! I like the image of Santa very much. I like that as he sits there transfixed people are seen moving around in a motion blur. I particularly like the blur on the right, which looks like a child running and is a perfect contrast to his stillness. Excellent captures!
