Description
Volume I - Episode 58
Where: Jerusalem, Israel
When: 2 years and 21 days before E-Day, 6:27 pm
At that very moment, Roni's phone began to ring.
It couldn't be, she thought, her heart pounding. Could it?
Her hand trembled slightly as she picked up the phone. "Allo?"
"Shalom!" said the heavily-accented voice on other other end of the line. "Efshar ledaber im geveret Ben-nun bevakasha?" Hello! May I speak to Miss Ben-nun?
"Medaberet," Roni replied. Speaking.
"At medaberet Anglit?" Do you speak English?
"Ken," Roni replied. "I mean...yes, sorry."
"Ah, good!" the distinctive Scottish voice exclaimed. Roni recognised that signature voice instantly. She had heard it countless times on countless TV documentaries about Gorod Drevnih. "Forgive my selfishness, Miss Ben-nun, but English makes things ever so much easier for me. My Hebrew is terribly rusty, I'm afraid. Ah! But I should introduce myself! My name is Doctor Dennis Adams. I'm a Professor of Archaeology at..."
"Sorry," Roni interrupted. "Sorry, Doctor Adams, but I know who you are. I've actually been...a big fan of yours...for some time now."
"Ah! What a delightful thing to hear!" Adams said. "And I must admit, I've been a fan of yours for a while now too! I've been reading your blogs about Gorod Drevnih. Fascinating work, Miss Ben-nun. Absolutely fascinating!"
Roni's heart swelled with pride. "Thank you so much, Doctor Adams! Truly...I mean...thank you!"
"Absolutely!" Adams said. "The article you wrote last night was very interesting. Very interesting indeed! And you are absolutely sure your calculations are correct? "
"Yes, sir," Roni replied. "I've spent the last six months checking and double-checking the data. I am very confident with my findings. The wall is moving. Gorod Drevnih has been growing significantly larger every year for the past 50 years."
"Fascinating!" Adams exclaimed. "Well that brings me to the reason for my call. My team and I would like very much to meet with you to discuss your findings."
"Your team?" Roni asked. "You mean...Project Enigma?"
"Absolutely!" Adams said, sounding delighted. "Is your passport in order? We were actually hoping to fly you to Prague tomorrow. Or we can come to Jerusalem early next week, if you would prefer?"
"No, no!" Roni all but shouted, unable to contain the excitement in her voice. "I'd love to come to...I mean...I can meet you in Prague, for sure!"
"Excellent!" Adams said. "And if you don't mind me asking, Miss Ben-nun, what do you do for work there in Jerusalem?"
"I work at the Science library at Hebrew University."
"Do you love it?"
"Not...exactly."
"Interesting," Adams replied. "Well, I definitely think we can find something more appropriate to your talents in Project Enigma, Miss Ben-nun. We will talk about that when you come to Prague tomorrow as well."
Roni's world slowed to a stop. Was I...was I really just offered a job with Project Enigma?
For the first time in years, a huge smile crossed Roni Ben-nun's face.
"Oh, and Miss Ben-nun?"
"Yes?" Roni said.
"I hope you don't mind me saying, but I think that Asaf fellow really likes you."
